6 Hits & 2 Misses from the Drugstore

Hits: Having almost given up on lipsticks from the Drugstore I have an unexpected hit to report for mature lips. L’Oreal has a beautiful sheer nude lipstick by Jennifer Lopez in their Color Riche range called JLO’s Nude. It’s beautiful with a bit of shimmer, flattering to anyone with lines on their lips. As a sheer color it doesn’t have very good lasting power, but is a joy to wear. The scent is slightly floral but not too overpowering. It’s available at Ulta for only 5,39 USD (it is currently on sale woo hoo)

Sticking with L’Oreal, in my post last Monday I wrote of the advantages of having a great lumiereflattering color for a quick one shade eye look. L’Oreal’s Color Riche L’Ombre Pure in the shade “Lumiere” is perfect for that. Unfortunately these only seem to be available in Europe, but in the UK they are in Boots & Superdrug and in Germany at any L’Oreal display.

I have found quite a few hits for damaged  hair recently. In principle apart from the follicle hair is dead, so all you are really looking for is products that help this look better, therefore haircare products tend to be quite simple in their formulation and there are rarely high-end products that are outstandingly better than those in the drugstore. Here’s a few of my good finds:

Conditioners: Aussie 3 Minute Miracle Reconstructor, smells delicious and comes in superb packaging where the bottle stands on its head allowing you to easily get all of the product out. This is a really nice conditioner, that improves combability.

However even better is: Hask Argan Oil Repairing Conditioner, it also smells pleasant and can be bought in individual use sachets (which give me 2 uses). This product is free of sulphates and parabens and gives even better combability than the Aussie.

You know when you are good and go to the hairdressers every month getting those split cocnutwaterends removed, but then in the weeks after at home you blow dry your hair and damaged hair is sticking up all over the place? Well if you do, Ogx’s Coconut Water weightless Hydration Oil is your new best friend. I either spray this onto my damp hair and style or if I have used other products for that I spray a little to my brush once I am done with styling and brush through and those terrible flyaway damaged hairs behave themselves, plus it makes my hair super glossy. This product has a strong coconut aroma.

And finally on the hits: I am so sorry to write about this, because I think that if you live outside of Germany or Asutria you will not be able to get it. I have long been looking for the perfect hand cream, on that absorbs without icky residue, conditions hands and smells nice. Believe it or not, I have been through countless hand creams and none of them fulfilled these criteria until now. For under 2 Euros, I found hand care heaven in the drugstore brand “treaclemoon”. The product is in small portable 75ml bottles and comes in satsuma, coconut, mallow, raspberry and cherry scents. I now own them all. Each has a slightly different formula depending on how damaged your skin is, but all of them absorb amazingly, all are non-sticky leaving no residue. This brand deserves to be a global hit! If you have relatives in Germany get them to pick some up for you, they can be found in DM.

treaclemoonFinally I have only 2 misses to report: Influenced by YouTube and Blogs I went off and essencelashprincessbought two Essence mascara’s. Both were of the Lash Princess range, one called “false lash effect mascara”, the other called “volume mascara”. Both looked very nice at application, better than I would expect for mascara’s that only cost around 3 Euro’s. But with one of them (can’t remember which) my eye starting itching almost immediately and this continued throughout the day, with the other the mascara flaked off terribly by lunch time.Due to my sensitive eyes, I will be avoiding Essence mascara’s going forward along with maybelline.
That’s all folks!

5 Minute Makeup for a Rough Monday Morning

If you are anything like me, your body time clock relaxed by the weekend rebels on a Monday morning and you are chronically late. Here’s how to have great looking makeup that makes you look totally rested and healthy in just 5 minutes

  1. Be a fan of BB cream, get yourself the best BB Cream for your complexion. Put this on quickly with your clean fingers for medium coverage and a healthy glow. As it absorbs it is very unlikely to be streaky.
  2. Own a great concealer that matches your skintone. When you are late, it is not the time for Kim K highlighting. Cover the flaws you have seamlessly and quickly. I recommend either Tarte Shape Tape or Nars Soft Matte (I prefer Soft Matte, it is harder to mess up in application)
  3. Use pressed powder for setting, that way you won’t overdo it and get cake face. Less errors to correct means less time used.
  4. Use the perfect reliable easy to blend bronzer. Ideally one that is not too heavy on the pigment, when you are in a rush you don’t want to overdo it and have to fix what you have done, better to be required to build. A dependable favorite of mine for fair skin is Physicians Formula Butter Bronzer.
  5. Get yourself the perfect neutral blendable long-wear blush (not over pigmented). The Tarte Amazonian Clay Blushers are a great choice
  6. Skip Contour and Highlight. You don’t need it, if you have bronzer and blusher on, you have already added dimension to your face.
  7. Have a one shade satin or shimmery go-to neutral eyeshadow. Ideally something that might not need primer and where if you mess up no one will notice. Champagne, Caramel and Taupe type satin can be awesome for this. Whack it on your eyelids with a good brush you can blend the edges out with and blend it below your lower lash line.
  8. If you need to do your eyebrows; use powder, it is fast, natural looking and more forgiving. Essence has great powders for under 3 dollars.Great higher-end options include Anastasia Beverly Hill and Benefit.
  9. Use a mascara with an easy to use wand, such as Benefit Roller Lash or Tarte Lashpaint. Use it, drop it in your handbag for additional coats if needed.
  10. Lips: opt for a sheer natural nude. That way you won’t need lip-liner. Or have this in your bag for applying on the go.
  11. Run!

Have a Great Monday!

Today I gave away 4 Mascara’s in favor of a free Tester…

I own and test a lot of mascaras. Today I gave away Urban Decay’s Lash Perversion, Smashbox Xtreme Lash, Maybelline’s Push Up Drama and something else. I still own a lot of mascaras, but my favorite since November last year has been a tiny travel size freebie tarteistlashpaintfrom a makeup set: Tarte’s Tarteist Lash Paint. This tiny tube has lasted 3 months now, used nearly every day and still going strong. I have bought the full size for when it runs out.

Why do I love it so much? Compared to my other Favorite Too Faced Better Than Sex, it does not really clump, as it doesn’t contain fibers it also doesn’t create spider legs. It does evenly coat the lashes making them thicker, and impart a bit of length (not too much), but above all it’s dependable. It stays on reliably all day, never transferring, never smudging, never flaking, never causing embarrassment.

I tried so hard, why did you fail me Mad Lash?

It is with sincere sadness that I declare that a product I was destined to love, has failed me.

I had heard that the world was going crazy about a new mascara by theBalm called Mad Lash. Granted I did not actually see any influencer going crazy about it, I love theBalm and I bought into hype about alleged hype!

I love theBalm, for me, they get it right where Benefit started to get it wrong. I am prepared to buy anything that might possibly suit me by theBalm, I am a fangirl.

I live in Germany, getting my hands on this new release was not easy. It doesn’t sell in retail here, online it wasn’t available from our version of Sephora called Douglas. Douglas though, is so old fashioned it takes them about a year to catch on that anything might be good (they never realized that Nars is good), so no way it was going to show up here soon. Thankfully the e-commerce moguls at Amazon took pity on me and I received the mascara towards the end of December. (You sense the drama in this post)

madlashUser Experience: The packaging is great. Who doesn’t smile at their packaging?! When I open up the tube I was immediately struck by how huge the wand is. This thing is enormous. It may be the silicony type and not fluffy, but it is a full inch long. I also noticed that it brought up a lot of product which was quite fluid. I wiped off as much as I could. I then carefully tried to apply it. I am a bit clumsy when applying mascara, despite my efforts at being extra careful, I could not avoid getting mascara all over the place. Being a smart “makeupista” I waited for it to dry and flicked the extra flecks off without problem. Then with the second coat the lashes started to clump together as the product is so fluid. I had to take a comb to separate them. The effect was no better than any other I know with a comparable silicony type wand. So very unfortunately a product fail.

I will not give up! I want to love this product. I am going to be that crazy person who hangs onto a mascara waiting for it to dry out in the hope it becomes perfect and says: hey this stuff is better than Tarte Lash Paint! We all know someone like that right?

Secret Under Eye Primer?

There’s a product which is currently sold out in every beauty store I searched in Berlin and I haven’t seen anyone raving about it online. If it happened I evidently missed the boat, or is this product launched in 2015 a top secret?

smashbox-mascara-lahes_without_limitsI am referring to Smashbox’s Photo Finish Hydrating Under Eye Primer. I stumbled across it by chance online, in a set called “Lashes without Limits”, a set containing full sized 9ml X-Rated Mascara,  a 4ml Photo Finish Lash Primer and a very small 5ml sized Photo Finish Hydrating Under Eye Primer. I ended up buying the set just to get the primer, as it alone was sold out in 4 retail stores.

I have dry under eyes with fine lines. Concealer travelling into fine lines is a common occurrence and towards the latter part of the day it will start to crease, regardless as to whether it has been set or not. I prefer not setting as the powder does the look and the actual feel of my dry skin no good. Generally I use very little concealer thereby minimizing travel, but unfortunately the more lipid there is in a concealer the more it will travel during he day, meaning that hydrating concealers are the ones that may end up actually looking worst. Understandable then, that I would hope that the product would help.

I applied it in the morning, over a layer of hyaluronic acid that had been topped with a moisturizer that had already sunk in. Immediately I could feel that the product was hydrating, I waited a few minutes and then applied my make up as per normal including concealer, on one eye I set it with powder on the other I did not.

Despite powdering the powdered area continued to feel comfortable, something that it not usually the case. The increased hydration did not result in any sinking into fine lines. As the day wore on my concealer did not crease on either side and wore down at the same rate as my foundation, with there being no visible distinction to them. Without the primer the concealer that had not been set with powder would typically crease and do so quicker than the set concealer, which would also crease, just slower, but due to the powder actually more visibly.

So, for me it’s no surprise that I will continue to use this primer, my under-eye area not feeling parched and remaining comfortable throughout the day would already be sufficient reason to do so. The even wear down, without creeping into fine lines and the lack of creasing make it a no-brainer.

I need better YouTube gurus 😉

One day, two mascaras, same effect, two very different experiences

Woah that’s a long post title, but it’s pretty accurate.

I test a lot of mascara’s, I don’t write about a lot of mascara tests. That’s what I do not to bore you ;). Today was a test with a bit of a difference. I am an Urban Decay fan. I love their eye shadows, I love their name. I am just a fan-girl. Unsurprising that I should test their urbandecayperversion“Perversion” Mascara. The website boasts volume and lengthening. What I got what very moderate volume, but good lengthening and a really nice natural look, one that actually made me look like I had phenomenal natural lashes and wasn’t wearing anything at all. A great win! And off I went to work..

Unfortunately, very short after application my eyes began a very slight burning. That burning you get when you are just slightly allergic to something. Long story short, the win rapidly developed into a loss that bothered me all day. I then got home in the evening and was looking forward to a relaxing evening sans makeup. Well the surprise was I needed to go out again. But definitely not with the mascara on, so I removed it, pretty easy to remove and applied yet another mascara to test, this time Blinc’s “Mascara Amplified”.

Blinc’s Mascara Amplified is a tubing Mascara in that instead of a paste being formed around your blincmascaraamplifiedlashes, it forms a kind of synthetic tube. This means that the mascara can be removed with warm water and a cotton pad, no special remover required. The marketing also states that it will not flake. Yep, well that is true, 8 hours of wear and no flaking. The finish was the same as that of the Urban Decay Perversion, little volume, much lengthening again, making my lashes look phenomenal, like fantastic natural lashes.  So the same finish as I had experienced earlier in the day with Perversion. This type of mascara is also specifically targeted at people who have sensitive eyes, specifically as it doesn’t flake and due to the “easy” removal. I experienced absolutely no irritation by the product.

Well that easy removal is not quite as easy as they make it out to be. It is true that it works well with a cotton pad and warm water, but the tubes wipe all over, meaning you need to rinse your face afterward to remove them, but at-least there are no chemicals required.

So there you go, two totally different products, retailing at the same price, with the same look but totally different experiences.

Incredible Holiday Deal: FREE Benefit Real Cheek Party Palette

Benefit blushes are expensive. They are also good quality and have good staying power. Working with them, they’re pretty foolproof and Hoola is one of the most versatile bronzers on the market.

Whilst blusher may not seem the most exciting Xmas present. There are two Benefit Cheek palettes I would love to have (well one of two, both are great, just in case anyone reading this is feeling generous ;)) There are some really great deals available in the US, which should excite the hearts of any fair to medium skinned beauty lover.

On the Benefit website there is a free “Real Cheeky Party” Palette with orders over 75 USD, The offer is valid until tomorrow. The palette contains Dandelion face powder | 4.0 g Net wt. 0.14 oz. • Hoola bronzer | 5.0 g Net wt. 0.17 oz. • CORALista face powder | 5.0 g Net wt. 0.17 oz. • rockateur blush | 5.0 g Net wt. 0.17 oz. • sugarbomb face powder | 6.0 g Net wt. 0.21 oz. • watt’s up! highlighter | 1.5 g Net wt. 0.05 oz. • they’re real! lengthening mascara in beyond black fun size mini | 0.36 g Net wt. 0.1 oz. • they’re real! push-up eyeliner in beyond black fun size mini | 3.0 g Net wt. 0.1 oz. It normally retails at 45 USD, so for free if you are already planning to spend over 75 USD for an order at Benefit is an amazing deal!

For reference one of these powders full size at 8.0 g Net wt. 0.28 oz retails at 29 USD. Yes you are not getting as much product, but you are getting may different looks!

I only wished that Benefit offered the same deal to it’s customers elsewhere in the world.

Product Fails – 4 disappointing Products in October & November

Every now and again you encounter a few products that just don’t work for you. They may work for others, but I think is especially important when a product has been an outright fail to let others know about it. Cosmetics are expensive items and consumers with a valid voice need to be heard above the marketing din. Everyone only has limited resources, so let’s spend our resources on things that work better. Here are my disappointments from October and November:

  1. Benefit They’re Real Push up Liner. This is one of the greatest product fails I havebenefitpushupliner encountered and the marketing claims are just unbelievable given how the product performs. On the packet it states 88% of users (based on 19 panelists) said it hugged the lash line. I am wondering if these people were drunk. The product is a gel liner in a tube. You twist the base and the liner is pushed up, at the tip there is a silicon type of envelope tip with a slant ( a bit like an injection syringe). Here my 3 complaints: the design in itself with product coming out of a silicon tip that has edges guarantees that it is not deposited close to the lashes, the gel comes out straight up, but the tip is slanted, meaning that there is consistently too much product on one side of the tip, the product is very dry and skips . It cost me 26 Euros, I have never been so annoyed with a manufacturer. Usually marketing is just exaggeration of positive traits, in this case, it’s outright lies.
  2.  Holika Holika Pig Nose Clear Black Head 3 Step Kit. I wrote about this in my recent post about A Short Foray into Korean Skincare. It removed nothing from my nose pores, seemingly my pores are very clear, but more worrying I had others test it whose noses quite obviously had blocked pores and it removed nothing from theirs either.
  3. Maybelline Super Stay 24hr Color Liquid Lipstick in the shade “non stop pink”. This applied incredibly streaky and it stayed less than 4 hours. Marketing was very optimistic here.
  4. Benefit Roller Lash Mascara. The Marketing claims that this mascara will lift an curl your lashes and states that 87% of their panel users (31 women) said it did that. It did it for me too during the test at the store. However, at the test in the store I was already wearing Too Faced mascara and the Benefit mascara being applied on top did lift and curl the lashes, but having paid the hard earned cash for it and having taken it home, it fell short of expectations. Using it by itself it did the lovely lift and curl thing, but almost as soon as it was dry the curl was gone. Yes, I used the correct rolling technique.

So there you go. If you use these products and have managed  to make them work for you, do let me know. I would love to have them work for me too. 🙂
